Winners Announced for the 1st Annual Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA)

Sourav Sarangi's Char…The No Man's Island and Paul Johannessen's Women of Fukushima win best documentary feature and short awards among films presenting stories of human rights and humanitarian development from around the globe.

LOS ANGELES, May 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Today, award-winning international documentary production and social impact agency, DEEDA Productions, announced the winners for its first annual Social Impact Media Awards (SIMA), an international film competition and awards dedicated to showcasing exceptional documentary films and impact videos that spotlight humanitarian and social impact issues from around the globe.

"All winning films stand out in their creative approach to impact storytelling, in their ability to advance the dialogue on human rights and humanitarian development, in their potential to inspire awareness, compassion and social transformation, and to ignite a deeper understanding of how global issues affect the everyday lives of people and societies around the world. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to see so many inspirational and educational works in our first year of the competition and look forward to sharing such powerful films with global audiences through our travelling series and programs," says SIMA Executive Director, Daniela Kon.

Winners were selected by a jury of media and humanitarian industry leaders from a pool of 267 films from over 80 countries.  Awards were given out to 10 winners and 6 jury prize recipients in the Documentary Film and Educational Impact Video categories. Jury prizes come with an unrestricted honorarium of $500 per film provided by DEEDA Productions, G-Technology, Cinecause, and Flemings. Winning films captured stories from around the world, including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Columbia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, India, Japan, Nepal, Tanzania, and the United States.

"It was an honor to participate on the jury of this inaugural program.  These films exemplify the power of cinema to create social change.  SIMA is a terrific platform to generate more awareness for such projects and their related causes; and CineCause is proud to support the efforts," says juror and CineCause founder Jon Fitzgerald.

"In just its first year SIMA curated an unbelievable collection of films -- both in the pure beauty of the films and in the depth of their message/impact. Daniela has set a high standard that I know she will be able to maintain in the years ahead. This is just the beginning. SIMA truly scored the planet for stories that need to be told, about problems that need to be solved -- and found them!" says juror and President of Creative Visions Foundation, Trevor Hall.

The 2013 SIMA jury was comprised of SIMA Executive Director Daniela Kon, Creative Visions President & CEO Trevor Hall, Journalist and Tiziano Project Founder Andrew McGregor, Hollywood Film Festival Executive Director Jon Fitzgerald, Academy-Award nominated Editor Enat Sidi, Producer Darius Fisher, Film Editor Kimberley Hassett, Development Consultant Kristi Manning, Writer & Development Consultant Jennifer Lentfer, Development Consultant Daniela Papi, and Educator and Development Consultant Maryann Bylander.
