Wicked Start announces top industries for new startups- Food & Beverage, Retailing, and Business Products & Services lead the way for new business ideas being launched

NEW YORK, Jan. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Wicked Start (www.wickedstart.com), the online startup accelerator, reveals that Food & Beverage, Retailing, and Business Products & Services were the top three types of business ideas developed in 2012, accounting for 36% of total new ideas being incubated. "Given current marketplace trends, in particular with more simplified access to online sales and distribution channels, we are not surprised that these types of business ideas are being developed," said Wicked Start Founder, Bryan Janeczko

Food & Beverage: With the proliferation of customized diets, food allergies, as well as the increased demand for innovative and artisanal food & beverage products (ranging from cheese to beer), there is ample opportunity for startups to create, launch and showcase their products at farmers markets and with local grocers.

Retailing: Creating and selling retail products has become more accessible thanks to a combination of decreased manufacturing costs and easy access to online distribution platforms such as Etsy. This has enabled many entrepreneurs to start a business from home or while working part-time, by making the product themselves or taking advantage of an array of low cost manufacturing options. These trends have helped accelerate locally produced and 'Made In America" items, which has been growing in importance to U.S. consumers. "We predict an increase in startups in 2013 and beyond creating unique and mass customized products with the advent of on-demand manufacturing and 3D printing," Janeczko said.

Business Products & Services:  Providing products and services to businesses, small and large, rounds out the top new business ideas being developed. Consulting services are a lower cost way for businesses to gain expertise from professionals who are offering their time by the hour or by the project.  Innovators are also developing new time saving and cost reduction services to market to businesses. In large part, the Internet has enabled many of these new business opportunities to flourish, such as managing and backing up critical business data, crunching business data, and managing CRM or sales solutions.

In 2012, Wicked Start member, Angelique Mercurio, officially launched Energy Solutions Forum, her business products & services company. She wanted to take her experience as a research analyst and turn it into a scalable business opportunity. The preparation involved to start a business is a big mental hurdle, not to mention the time, passion and startup capital that can seem overwhelming at times.  Having a community to explore, share and help turn a passion into reality is critical for starting up smart. "I first heard of Wicked Start when I attended a Wicked Start founder's startup panel and was confident that a fellow Wall Streeter-turned-entrepreneur could understand and support my vision for starting a business," Mercurio said. "Wicked Start helped me to figure out and realize the key milestones I needed to hit before I launched."

Approximately 543,00 businesses were started in the U.S. in 2011, according to the Kauffman Foundation and preliminary figures for 2012 show a similar number of new businesses started. For 2013, we expect the same or a slight increase in startup activity.  In 2012, Wicked Start experienced an increase of over 50% in the number of users leveraging the free startup and business planning tools available online at the WickedStart.com website.

Technology has continued to drive down the costs of starting a new business, which makes starting up today more appealing- and accessible- to aspiring entrepreneurs. The average cost of starting a business now is approximately $68,000, which is much lower than even 5 years ago.
