We've Been Up All Night - For 35 Years

CHIGAGO, Aug. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The veterinarians and staff at Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center (www.ChicagoPetEmergency.com) have been up all night since September, 1978.  That's when Chicago's oldest and largest emergency veterinary hospital first opened its doors to serve Chicago area pets in need of emergency or critical care.

Starting out in what had been an automotive garage, a group of 20 local veterinarians transformed the building into a small emergency veterinary facility that would stay open all night.  Over the course of its history, Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center has updated and expanded its facility to meet the latest technology and practices in emergency, critical and specialty veterinary care.  Today, the hospital treats more than 11,000 cats and dogs each year in its emergency room.  Thousands more are treated by the hospital's veterinary specialists.

Originally, the facility was a one-story building staffed with 2 full time veterinarians, 4 part-time veterinarians and 2 full time technicians.  The small original facility has been replaced with a three-story, state-of-the-art hospital with 14 emergency veterinarians, 20 veterinary specialists and a total staff of approximately 150.

Just like many comprehensive medical centers for people, Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center today offers the latest in emergency and specialty care.  Diagnostic services include MRI, CT, ultrasound and an in-house laboratory.  An on-site blood bank and the most up-to-date surgical suites make it possible to treat even dire cases.  The intensive care unit can provide blood transfusions, heart-monitoring and oxygen cages for critically ill patients needing advanced care.

Now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, Chicago's oldest and largest veterinary emergency clinic truly has been "Up All Night" for 35 years.  In addition the latest emergency and intensive veterinary care, Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center offers veterinary specialty care in nine fields:

  • Cardiology
  • Dentistry
  • Dermatology
  • Diagnostic imaging
  • Internal medicine
  • Neurology
  • Oncology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgery

Supervising veterinarian, Dr. Jerry Klein, joined Chicago Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center in 1980, just two years after the facility opened.  He has seen many changes in what can be done to save pets in emergency situations.
