TAMPA, Fla., May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- HCG off label uses
The hormone hcg is currently approved to treat a number of conditions. For instance one common use is to induce ovulation in women during fertility treatments. Similarly the hormone is used to increase testosterone and sperm production in men for the same reason. Finally hcg is sometimes used on young boys before puberty in order for the testes to drop into the scrotum.
Off label refers to using a medication for reasons other than what was initially intended and currently approved. For instance Botox was created to treat a condition called blepharospasm or abnormal contractions of the eyelids but is widely used for cosmetic purposes.
Similarly hcg has had some off label uses in conjunction with the hcg diet, a 30 day extremely low calorie program designed for rapid weight loss. It is critical to note that while prescription hcg is used for this purpose, the FDA has warned that oral or homeopathic hcg has no effect at all. In fact, during research they found that there were either trace amounts or no hcg at all with these products. While this may seem like a small distinction it is not, in a nutshell this means that while hcg is not approved for weight loss, it can be used for weight loss provided it is not the hcg drops that are being prescribed.
Another off label use for hcg shots are in conjunction with people using anabolic steroids for testosterone replacement therapy purposes or for people using these steroids illegally for bodybuilding or athletic purposes. When anabolic steroids are used it forces the body to limit or stop producing its own testosterone. This process can lead to a males testicles shrinking over time, a condition known as testicular atrophy. The use of the hcg injection can help a man restore both the size of his testicles as well as his natural testosterone production.
When attempting to use a medicine for off label purposes it is important to see a doctor in order to establish if you are a good candidate for the program. Another thing to keep in mind is that your insurance is unlikely to cover the purchase of this medication because it is being used for a reason other than it was intended.
