SAN FRANCISCO, June 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Old Mill Cottages by The Englander Building Company is featured as an example of "infill done right" in Builder Magazine.
As Barbara Ballinger noted in the article, "...building well isn't just about filling in with single-family houses or condominiums. It's about fitting in with what's already there. It's about a building's height and scale. Then, it's style, materials, landscaping, sustainability and respect for historic preservation." As an infill community, Old Mill Cottages does just that.
Originally zoned for four residences, the sale of the 50 foot by 130 foot lot initially raised community concerns, noted Peter Englander, principal of The Englander Building Company and developer of the community. Working with Francis Gough Architect, the team redesigned the infill community to work in conjunction with the setting, creating a community that included gardens and rear yard-accessed parking, designing homes in the local Shingle-style vernacular with a connection to the street, ultimately creating a community of three three-bedroom, 1,500 square-foot condominiums and one one-bedroom, 500 square-foot affordable unit.
"Working with the community in the design stage was very important, and we believed in the importance of this infill community. We wanted to put our names on something we would always be proud of, and we are honored to be recognized for our efforts on this community," added Englander.
