NEW YORK, April 26, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Child Mind Institute, dedicated to transforming mental health care for children everywhere, is waging war against the stigma, lack of awareness, and misinformation that cause so many children to miss out on treatments that can change their lives with its second annual national public education program, Speak Up for Kids. It will be held during National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, May 6-12, 2012.
"Though 15 million children in the United States have psychiatric and learning disorders, very few of them will be identified and get the help they need," said Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz, president of the Child Mind Institute. "That's why we need you to Speak Up for Kids and to let the world know that silence and shame are not options. The Child Mind Institute is committed to providing the support and information families need to get children the care they deserve."
Speak Up for Kids has powerhouse partners and hundreds of children's mental health professionals across the country that will deliver scientifically sound talks about childhood mental disorders and topics relating to raising healthy, happy kids. The topics include: ADHD, anxiety, behavioral challenges, bullying, depression, trauma, and social media. The Child Mind Institute will host live Facebook events on Monday, May 7 and on Friday, May 11 at 12pm EST. The Child Mind Institute will also host a live tweetchat with CommonSense Media and Parents magazine, "Parenting in the Digital Age," on Tuesday, May 8 at 7pm EST.
In addition, nearly 40,000 individuals are already using their social media muscle to raise awareness of children's mental health by lighting up the Child Mind Institute's interactive map in green – the color of children's mental health.
