SAN FRANCISCO, July 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Paul Hawken, one of the most respected and widely read sustainable business leaders of our time, joined the Presidio Graduate School faculty effective July 1, 2013. Among the world's top sustainability graduate schools, Presidio places its MBA and MPA graduates at the forefront of the industry in the Bay Area and beyond. Hawken will co-teach one of Presidio's flagship courses, Principles of Sustainable Management, and will direct a new book and research project called Drawdown, a collaboratively-produced and interactive encyclopedia of off-the-shelf climate change solutions.
A noted author and speaker, Hawken has appeared on numerous media including the Today Show, Larry King, Talk of the Nation, Charlie Rose, and has been profiled or featured in hundreds of articles including the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Washington Post, Business Week, Esquire, and US News and World Report. His writings have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Mother Jones, Utne Reader, Orion, and many other publications.
"We're excited to welcome Paul to the Presidio community," says William Shutkin, President and CEO of Presidio Graduate School. "He's been a friend of the school for many years, inspiring our students and faculty alike. Paul's a gifted teacher, and will bring to the classroom insights and lessons one simply can't get from a textbook or case study. He has been a sustainability thought leader and entrepreneur for over three decades, with knowledge and experience that have few equals."
"In my work as an author and lecturer, I have always engaged with students," Hawken explains. "Presidio, however, will give me the opportunity to work with dedicated students over time with continuity, an interactive relationship that builds towards a deeper understanding for both the students and myself. The reimagination of business and public administration is happening in the classroom and the field. I'm delighted to be joining the Presidio faculty, to create a new, ecological and socially responsible form of commerce."
Hawken has authored articles, op-eds, and peer-reviewed papers, and has written seven books including four national bestsellers, The Next Economy (Ballantine 1983), Growing a Business (Simon and Schuster 1987), The Ecology of Commerce (HarperCollins 1993) and Blessed Unrest (Viking, 2007). Paul Hawken was voted in 2012 as the #1 author on business and the environment by professors in 67 business schools and the #1 person who influenced their career by Chief Sustainability Officers in corporate America. Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution (Little Brown, September 1999), co-authored with Amory Lovins, has been read and referred to by several heads of state including President Bill Clinton who called it one of the five most important books in the world today. His books have been published in over 50 countries in 29 languages. Growing a Business became the basis of a 17-part PBS series, which Hawken hosted and produced. The program, which explored the challenges and pitfalls of starting and operating socially responsive companies, was shown on television in 115 countries and watched by over 100 million people. Hawken has been awarded seven honorary doctorates.
