SOUTHERN PINES, N.C., Feb. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Student Doctor Network (SDN) today announced the publication of a new fifth edition of How to Choose a Medical Specialty, by Anita Taylor, as well as a free online companion site designed to help medical students choose the medical specialty they wish to pursue.
The book, by Anita Taylor, provides a comprehensive overview of every specialty and the internal medicine sub-specialties approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties. Detailed insights from practitioners of each specialty, including what they like best and least about their jobs and their job satisfaction level are included. There are also questionnaires that allow students to identify how their values and personality traits line up with those of different specialties. Information on couples matching and military medicine are also available. How to Choose a Medical Specialty, Fifth Edition is currently available in print, and will soon be available in major e-book formats.
The companion application, available online at http://www.studentdoctor.net/schools/selector, allows students to complete a consolidated questionnaire online and obtain a ranked list of specialties for which they are suited. Additionally, a brief overview of each specialty is provided along with SDN physician profiles, specialty specific articles and discussions from the SDN forums, and links to key professional organizations and specialty resources.
"How to Choose a Medical Specialty is a great reference, and one I used when I was a medical student," said Dr. Lee Burnett, founder of the Student Doctor Network. "The quizzes helped me narrow down my specialty choices."
"The quizzes seemed like a natural thing to move to an online application as part of our free offerings to help students move into their health professional careers. We contacted Anita Taylor, who was enthusiastic about creating a new version of the book and about our ideas for the companion application," he added.
"I am excited that we are able to provide an updated edition of my work to a new generation of future physicians," said Anita Taylor. "I also am excited to see content move into new formats via the electronic versions of the book and the online application. SDN's mission to help students through their education process aligns with my own desire to help students make the best choices for their future careers."
