Sleep Disorders & Treatment Options: Dr. Kent Smith Testifies Before the U.S. House of Representatives

FRISCO, Texas, Oct. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Sleep Dallas founder and President of the American Sleep and Breathing Academy (ASBA) Dr. Kent Smith on September 27th testified before the US House of Representatives regarding alternative treatment options, specifically oral appliance therapies, for people who suffer from sleep apnea and sleep-related disorders.

Dr. Smith was accompanied by other leaders in the area of dental sleep medicine as well as NFL superstar Jet Stream Roy Green, who has personally experienced the life-changing effects of oral appliance therapy after years of suffering with his own sleep apnea. Referencing the two strokes and three heart attacks he experienced as a result of his sleep apnea condition, Mr. Green pointed out that his health issues have disappeared since being treated with an oral appliance. Dr. Smith said, "We have a responsibility to educate the public about the grave health problems caused by fatigue, sleep apnea, and other sleep disorders. The good news is that there are life-saving oral appliance therapies available to those who cannot or will not tolerate CPAP machines."

More than 70 members of Congress and other regulators attended the hearing aimed at creating increased awareness about the public health concerns posed by undiagnosed and ineffectively treated sleep disorders. Dr. Smith and his colleagues at the ASBA are continuing their campaign to educate health professionals and the general public about advances in treatment options for sleep-related issues. They are in the process of scheduling another hearing to be announced at a later date.

According to the Institute of Medicine, an estimated 50-70 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder, the most common of which is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). When left undiagnosed or ineffectively treated, sleep disorders contribute to the development of a number of serious health and safety concerns, not least of which are inhibited cognitive abilities and reaction times vital for everyday activities such as operating a motor vehicle.
