SAINT PAUL, Minn., Sept. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Saint Paul College has once again been named the #1 community college in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine in its 2013 College Rankings issue, an honor the college also received in 2010. This year, four other MnSCU colleges were also named among the nation's top 50 community colleges: Itasca Community College (#21), Vermilion Community College (#38), Minnesota West Community & Technical College – Granite Falls (#40) and Ridgewater College (#41).
"We are committed to offering every Minnesotan, from every walk of life access to an extraordinary education that will prepare them for success in their careers, in their lives, and in their communities," said Steven Rosenstone, chancellor of Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. "I am very proud that five of our state colleges ranked among the very best in the nation. This is powerful testimony to the commitment that our faculty and staff have to student success."
"For over a century, Saint Paul College has emphasized the importance of teaching, supporting, and engaging our students in the learning process," said Rassoul Dastmozd, president of Saint Paul College. "This recognition validates what we have practiced at Saint Paul College since our founding in 1910. Students are our first priority. Our faculty and staff can be very proud of this outstanding achievement."
As the only public two-year college in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Saint Paul College serves a diverse student body and works closely with industry partners to ensure that graduates have the skills to successfully enter the workforce. Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman stated, "Saint Paul College has prepared many generations of our community's students for academic and professional success, and we are grateful to have them as a strong contributing partner to Saint Paul's economic vitality."
Matt Kramer, President/CEO of the Saint Paul Area Chamber of Commerce echoed the mayor's sentiment stating, "Saint Paul College is a true asset to our community and a benefit to workforce training for Saint Paul."
Located in the heart of Saint Paul's Cathedral Hill, Saint Paul College is the fastest growing two-year comprehensive community and technical college in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system. The college offers over 100 degree, diploma and certificate programs including Career and Technical Education, general liberal arts education areas of study that transfer to four-year colleges and universities, short term workforce training and continuing education, as well as English as a Second Language and remedial education. The college serves more than 9,800 students each year.
Washington Monthly describes its guide as offering a "different kind" of ranking. The publication states, "Instead of lauding colleges for closing their doors to all but an elite few, we give high marks to institutions that enroll low-income students, help them graduate, and don't charge them an arm and a leg to attend… Our rankings aim to identify institutions that are acting on behalf of the true public interest." The rankings are based on data provided by the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) and graduation data from the U.S. Department of Education. CCSSE data is based on surveys of students at approximately 700 community colleges across the United States.
