A native of Santa Cruz, California, Virostko has earned a reputation as one of the most fearless surfers in the world. Having won the Mavericks competition, which is known as the "Super Bowl" of big-wave surfing three consecutive times, Darryl is an icon in world of surfing and watersports. With a flourishing career in big-wave surf competitions and corporate sponsorships, Darryl has appeared in the surfing films including:  Riding Giants, Step Into Liquid, Billabong Odysseys and most recently The Westsiders, the award winning documentary that follows the rise and fall of the Santa Cruz surf tribe.

Virostko was at the top of his professional surfing career when the celebrity lifestyle that accompanied his success brought with it alcohol and methamphetamine addiction. A near fatal fall from a cliff almost killed him – that was when he decided to get help. Sober now for seven years, Virostko is now leading the Surfing & Ocean Activities at Beacon House. "Our crew is focusing on physical activity and replacing the high of drugs with the endorphins of exercise," says Virostko. "Having the title of Director of Surfing & Watersports Activities here at Beacon House, truly makes me feel I am have come full circle in my recovery journey." Using his amazing skillset as an accomplished waterman, Darryl has designed an exercise-based approach to rehab including surfing at local beaches and other water sports, for clients currently in the program at Beacon House, as well as the treatment center's Alumni.

"Our Experiential Treatment Program is quite unique," adds Beacon House CEO & Executive Director, Phyllis Meagher. "Being located on the coast of the Monterey Peninsula allows us take advantage of all the recreational activities this region has to offer.  We are thrilled to be able to incorporate these types of outdoor experiences into our recovery programs here at Beacon House. Learning to cope with life beyond addiction is a cornerstone of recovery and each of our residential program options at Beacon House includes the incorporation of 'real life' experiences into each client's recovery journey."

In proximity to world class surf and water sports up and down the coast between Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel and Big Sur, this new addition to the Beacon House Experiential Treatment Program is quite unique. In addition, Beacon House has access to famous golf facilities, private horse stables in Carmel, yoga and endless outdoor recreational pastimes. Beacon House believes that balance in treatment is critical and one way to model balance is through experiential therapy or recreationally based activities which promote a recovery-based lifestyle. By introducing coping tools for stress-reduction and mindfulness, hope is restored through outdoor, spiritual discoveries.
