Pool Cover Company, LOOP-LOC, Shares Tips on Preparing the Backyard for Winter

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Nov. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Pool cover company that services New Jersey, LOOP-LOC, shares tips on preparing the backyard for winter.

Chances are that you worked hard on the backyard all spring and summer so you could enjoy it during the height of pool season. Do not let your blood, sweat, and tears unravel over the winter months. Follow these tips to prepare your yard for winter so that come spring, your lawn and flowers will flourish!

Mow the lawn. Many homeowners believe that once the summer ends, the lawn does not need to be mowed until the spring. However, there are grasses that grow in cooler weather and will continue to do so until the ground freezes—albeit slowly. Maintaining a mowing schedule of every 10 to 14 days will keep leaf litter at a minimum so areas of the lawn will not be smothered, and reduce fungus damage should there be early snowfall.

Fertilize the grass. While you should fertilize your lawn throughout the growing season, fertilizing it before winter arms it with much-needed potassium so the grass is more likely to survive the winter weather.

Remove the leaves. Removing, or mulching, the leaves from the backyard is probably one of the most time-consuming tasks when it comes to lawn maintenance. It is important, though, so the grass does not get smothered. You can mulch, or redistribute, the leaves back into the lawn. You can also rake them when they dry out.

Prune the perennials. Fall is the optimal time to prune and cut back your perennials. They completed their growth cycle and can now store energy to last them through the winter months.

Build the compost. Fall is a perfect time to build up your compost pile so that it is ready for spring. Clear all the plants from the season and put them on the compost pile, and add some leaves. You can also add some composted manure, so it can break down over winter.
