About The Versatile PhD

Founded by Paula Chambers as a listserv in 1999 while she was writing her dissertation, Versatile PhD was the first ever online community dedicated to non-academic careers for humanities PhDs.  Thanks to quality content and a supportive, confidential environment, it thrived and attracted participants from other disciplines. In 2004, social scientists were officially added; in 2010, VPhD became a web-based community; and in 2011 it began serving STEM disciplines by popular demand. Staffed entirely by PhDs, Versatile PhD is supported by institutional subscriptions: 79 research universities subscribe (see list on home page) and over 85,000 individuals have joined.  It has received positive coverage in the Chronicle of Higher Education: http://chronicle.com/article/More-Universities-Break-the/129647/ and the New York Times: http://vphd.info/1dZIUem, http://vphd.info/1f8TCgy.
