MOORESTOWN, N.J., June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Parkeon, a global leader in urban mobility solutions for the parking and transit industries has announced that it has been awarded a contract to provide a new off-board fare collection system for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, TX, also known as METRO. METRO serves the City of Houston and its surrounding areas.
Parkeon was awarded the contract following a competitive bidding process involving multiple vendors. Parkeon will implement the new system for a not to exceed total of $739,200.
The Parkeon system will serve METRO's expanding light rail system and will feature 44 Strada Transit Pay Stations, which will be manufactured in Plano, TX. The Strada has many of the attributes of a standard Ticket Vending Machine but typically at 20% of the cost. METRO's Stradas will accept coins, bills, and credit cards, feature a full color 7" display screen, multiple languages and audio. Strada Pay Stations connect to Parkeon's hosted back-office system for reporting of ticketing activity as well as collection and maintenance alerts. The system will provide flexible fare options and remote dynamic configuration changes through a connection to Parkeon Cloud Services.
This new implementation adds to Parkeon's growing list of clients already utilizing its low cost off-board fare collection system, which includes New York City Transit, Community Transit, Lane Transit and Portland Streetcar. The installation in Houston will also add to Parkeon's significant installed base of pay stations in Texas. Parkeon has delivered over 1,000 pay stations configured for on-street parking throughout Texas serving cities such as Austin, Fort Worth and San Antonio.
"We are more than pleased that Parkeon has been selected for this important project in Houston," said Jim DuFon, Vice President of Sales at Parkeon. "There is a definite trend towards collecting fares off board and we provide the perfect solution combining flexible technology and an extremely reasonable cost."
The new system is planned to go live in August 2014.
