KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan. 31, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The 2011 National Barista Champion and longtime coffee aficionado, Pete Licata, has returned to his hometown of Kansas City by way of Hawaii to work for Parisi Coffee as Quality Assurance Manager.
Licata, 34, has spent the last four years in Hawaii working in various aspects of coffee and later as an international coffee consultant. In his new position at Parisi, he will be responsible for Parisi's customer and employee coffee education programs as well as the tasting and testing of all Parisi Coffee products.
Licata is the 2011 US Barista Champion (USBC) and went on to win second place at the world barista competition in Bogota, Columbia where he competed against the top baristas from 54 countries. Licata began competing in 2005 and has won several top honors throughout the years, including regional champion in 2005, 2008, 2010, 2011 and just this month in Kansas City (2013). The standard competition consists of a 15-minute performance that features the preparation of four espressos, four cappuccinos and four original, signature drinks.
With a passion for teaching, Licata is a proponent for training baristas in the art of making great coffee. During his consultancy, he trained baristas from throughout the world who were looking to improve their knowledge in coffee preparation methods, learn advanced skills and understand the origins of coffee and the industry as a whole.
"Now, more than ever, we want barista staff to learn proper coffee preparation techniques, while at the same time gaining knowledge about coffee production, growing conditions, varietal characteristics and various processing methods," Licata said. "That's why this position at Parisi Coffee is a perfect fit. I'm pleased to join such a strong local brand that has created an impressive product."
Parisi Coffee has been roasting coffee in Kansas City for six years. During that time the company has established itself as a high-end, specialty coffee company offering product in grocery stores, local restaurants and now providing a unique coffee experience in two local cafes (Union Station in Kansas City, Mo. and the soon-to-open café at Park Place in Leawood, Kan.)
"Pete brings more great coffee experience to our leadership team and strengthens not only the education for own staff, but will also help our restaurant and catering customers execute great coffee" said Scott Presnell, director of marketing for Parisi Coffee. "We have high expectations of how we want the Parisi experience to be. It continues to be our desire to create art in every cup, no matter where you get it."
