CLEVELAND, Ohio and COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Alpha Imaging LLC, a leading distributor of advanced medical imaging equipment based in Cleveland, Ohio, today announced a new strategic business agreement with OhioHealth, a nationally-recognized, not-for-profit healthcare organization based in Columbus, Ohio, to bring Hologic women's health solutions and Shimadzu Medical Systems and Del Medical X-ray equipment to Central Ohio over the next five years. The move advances OhioHealth's commitment to deliver the most cutting-edge medical imaging technology to their patients and further improves breast cancer screening, detection and treatment capabilities.
"The strategic business agreement with Alpha Imaging ensures that we can continue to provide our patients with the most advanced imaging technology," according to Jason Theadore, Vice President, Health Center Operations, OhioHealth. "Patients throughout Central Ohio will have access to breakthrough technology that allows them to have the highest quality exam."
One of the imaging devices included in the strategic business agreement is the Hologic Selenia Dimensions* Tomosynthesis system. Tomosynthesis is a revolutionary 3D technology that gives radiologists the ability to identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue associated with traditional 2D mammography. Awarded FDA approval in 2011, this 3D technology, when used in combination with a conventional mammogram, finds cancers missed by 2D imaging.(1) The Dimensions Tomosynthesis technology provides benefits for all patient populations, but is especially effective in women with dense breasts. More than 40% of women have dense breasts, putting them at increased risk for developing breast cancer. Dense breast tissue may obscure malignancies on a standard 2D mammogram.
Currently, 17 states including Ohio have pending or have enacted legislation that mandates patients are notified of their dense breast tissue and offered guidance for additional clinical follow-up. OhioHealth has taken proactive steps to ensure all breast patients receive the best direction available for their individual care. "We continually innovate new ways to improve our breast health program. If follow-up is required after a mammogram, we provide a dedicated "Nurse Navigator" as each patient's single point-of-contact for all consultation, scheduling and reporting," said Leslie Steele, Director, OhioHealth Breast Health Institute. "3D mammography technology ensures our imaging equipment is as cutting-edge as our clinical workflows."
Alpha Imaging installed the second Hologic 3D breast tomosynthesis system in the U.S. at OhioHealth in 2011. "We are thrilled to continue our long-standing relationship with OhioHealth with this new agreement," said Michael Perrico, CEO, Alpha Imaging. "It is a testament to the strength of our product portfolio and customer-centric approach to sales and service."
Other equipment included in the strategic agreement with Alpha Imaging are Shimadzu Medical Systems' line of award-winning radiographic, fluoroscopic and portable X-ray imaging products. Shimadzu's MobileDaRt Evolution portable digital radiography system improves patient care by moving the X-ray equipment to the patient's bedside as opposed to transporting the patient to X-ray equipment often located in the radiology department. This method can prevent further harm to the patient and shorten time-to-diagnosis. It enables OhioHealth to manage the care of the sickest and most critical patients right in their hospital beds, such as those in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Neonatal ICU (NICU) and emergency department. X-ray images are displayed directly on the portable unit within seconds and wirelessly transferred to the hospital network for further analysis and storage.
"Alpha Imaging has assembled a unique product portfolio that can enhance diagnostic and interventional imaging capabilities at all OhioHealth facilities," says Theadore. "They are helping us stay on the leading edge of technology to the benefit of our patients."
