New event layout and $10,000 cash grand prize to steal the show at South Carolina's Official BBQ Championship

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., July 31, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- For the first time in the event's history, the eighth annual Beach, Boogie & Barbeque Festival is offering a $10,000 cash prize to the winner of South Carolina's official barbeque championship.

That's not the only change to the end-of-summer extravaganza that will take place Labor Day Weekend. A new event layout will ensure the event is bigger and better than ever. It runs Friday, Aug. 30, from 6 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, Aug. 31, from noon to 9:30 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 1, from noon to 5 p.m. The festival is held at Grand Park at The Market Common and will feature finger lickin' good barbeque and food from both vendors and competitors available for purchase, along with free live entertainment all three days and a fireworks extravaganza.

Over $20,000 in cash prizes will be awarded during this three-day event. Registered cooking teams will compete for the chance to win $10,000 for first place in Saturday's barbeque championship. The second-place winner will be awarded $3,000; $2,000 will go to third place; fourth place gets $1,000; and fifth- through tenth-place teams each walk away with $500.

"We are excited to grow the number of barbeque competition teams for this year's event by increasing the cash prize amounts, simplifying cooking categories and guidelines, lowering registration costs and offering an easier layout for team set up," said Kenny Craven, with the OMAR Shrine Temple.

This year's barbeque team registration fee has dropped to $100 per team, a hefty $150 less than the previous year, and amateur barbeque teams are encouraged to compete. The deadline for team registration is Aug. 23. For information on team registration and details, visit Competing barbeque teams will be located on the corner of Forbes Court and Farrow Parkway, along with the main stage and other festival vendors.

"Both competitors and festival attendees will enjoy an enhanced layout for this year's event," said Amie Lee, president of Palmetto Event Productions, Inc. "The barbeque teams will be better positioned for sampling on Saturday and the area for the main stage will accommodate a larger audience. The footprint for the festival will still include Grand Park on the south side of the lake as in year's past and incorporate the field on the corner of Forbes Court and Farrow Parkway to allow for growth."

Organized by Palmetto Event Productions and the OMAR Shriners, the 2013 Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival is a free, family-friendly event that will also commemorate the 75th anniversaries of the City of Myrtle Beach and the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Live entertainment throughout the three-day event will include: The Embers, Craig Woolard Band, Jim Quick & Coastline, Ty Brown, Wallstreet and many other regional entertainers. There will also be free kids activities and games, CrossFit® demonstrations by area affiliates, Flyboard demonstrations on the lake, vendors and exhibitors selling festival food and art/craft favorites, and a free fireworks show on Saturday. Parking is also free and available throughout the Market Common area.

Keeping the festival's mission of an affordable event, attendees can sample delicious barbeque from competing teams on Saturday beginning at noon by purchasing a $10 wristband while supplies last. Children 6 and under can sample for free, and barbeque sandwiches and platters will also be available for purchase.

Along with the official S.C. Barbeque Championship on Saturday, festival goers will enjoy the 'Anything Goes' cooking contest and tasting on Friday, Aug. 30 and Wing Competition on Sunday. Sampling tickets can be purchased for $1 each in the 'Anything Goes' competition on Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. A multitude of dishes from shrimp creole and chicken bog to apple cobbler are available for tasting. Beer and wine will be sold all three days.

For the second year, the event is pleased to host the Shriners Hospital for Children screening on Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. It is coordinated by physicians and staff of the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Greenville, S.C., whose mission is to identify children ages newborn through 18 years who may qualify for treatment regardless of the families' ability to pay. No appointment is necessary and the screenings are open to the public. More than a dozen area children were approved for treatment during last year's screening.
