HOUSTON, Feb. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- How many high school students does it take to screw in a light bulb? The answer depends on the number of lamps they manufacture in their class on entrepreneurship.
The Post Oak High School, the newest division of the 50-year-old Post Oak School, began the mid-point of its inaugural year with a set of month-long classes that were determined by the interests of the students themselves. The term saw the students split into three groups to focus on one of three courses: Entrepreneurship and Design, Psychology, or the Study of History Through Game Simulation.
The students in the Entrepreneurship and Design course started a company, designed and fabricated products based on two lamp designs, and issued them for sale. Their initial success led the group to extend the business by inviting the other students to join the team in order to help the business grow. Their innovative lamp designs received glowing praise at both the school's biennial gala and at their kick-off party at Brasil café in Montrose.
Those who chose the Psychology course, in addition to learning the basics of the discipline, made use of the school's connection with the Houston Museum of Natural Science to do some field work. Students engaged in sociological observation of exhibit areas in the museum to study how visitors interacted with the exhibit displays. They submitted their report to the museum, where curators expressed interest in further study with the help of Post Oak students.
The students involved with the Study of History Through Game Simulation explored history through the eyes of the actors and documenters as they created their own mini-histories and wrote about them from various viewpoints. Simultaneously, they read classics by Thucydides, Polybius, and others. By documenting history through their own eyes as victors or vanquished, students gained a deeper understanding of how to read and interpret historic documents.
With January behind them, students began the spring semester at a full sprint. On Saturday, February 23, Post Oak High School participated in the 26th annual ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run as the culmination of their four-week running unit. The group had been challenging themselves with bi-weekly training runs as part of their physical fitness class. Two students ran the 10K, both reaching the finish in under an hour. The others completed the 5K, along with two parents and three staff. It was such a hit, the group is already planning their costumes for next year.
Admissions are underway for the next freshman class. Current eighth graders interested in joining the high school next fall are invited to the Admission Open House to be held on Wednesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. at 1102 Autrey Street in Houston's Museum District. The open house provides a chance for prospective students and their parents to meet students and teachers and to see this innovative learning environment designed to develop leadership and entrepreneurial skills, while cultivating student interest.
