CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich., April 25, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ --Because of the urgent and continuing need for funds for dental care for people with developmental disabilities, the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center (MORC) is holding its First Annual MORC Miles for Smiles 5K Run/Walk and 1/4 Mile Fun Run at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Independence Oaks County Park in Clarkston, Michigan.
The event proceeds will fund services not covered by Medicaid, including crowns, root canals, sedation, periodontal care and additional cleanings. While much of the funds have been restored by the state, many people continue to struggle for adequate dental care.
Registration is $30 for the event, which includes a cotton t-shirt and post-race refreshments. Participants can register online at www.morcinc.org or on race day at the registration tables at the Twin Chimneys site at Independence Oaks. Checks should be made out to Macomb-Oakland Regional Center. The contact for race information is email@example.com or Carol Rowland at 248-276-8007.
"It's a great cause, a great park and a great course," said Carol Rowland in MORC administration and the race director. "We hope to raise a lot because many people are suffering from lack of access to care."
The event also includes a 1/4 mile walk that is free for people with developmental disabilities served by MORC and their caregivers.
MORC is asking dental professionals to participate in the race.
"Just who is the fastest dental professional?" commented Rowland about the unique 5K Run division for fastest dental professional. "We hope that we have many dental professionals come out, get to know our people with disabilities and have a lot of fun.
"We continue to seek sponsors and donors," concluded Rowland. "The Oakland County Hygienists' Association was the first sponsor to sign up and many of the hygienists are participating in the run."
MORC began an Adopt a Smile Dental Campaign in 2003 to help restore budget cuts in Medicaid coverage for dental care for people with disabilities and to encourage dental professionals to donate care.
MORC is a nonprofit human services agency based in Auburn Hills and Clinton Township that supports 5,500 people in southeastern Michigan with developmental disabilities. MORC, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is known internationally for helping close all 12 institutions for people with developmental disabilities in Michigan. MORC has assisted 54 nations with developing homes in the community.
