LOOP-LOC, Manufacturer of Inground Pool Liners, Talks about Ice Skating

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., Dec. 20, 2017 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- LOOP-LOC, manufacturer of inground pool liners that services New Jersey, talks about ice skating.

The origin of ice skating is believed to have occurred in the country of Finland more than 3,000 years ago. Finlandians glided on the ice by strapping sharpened, flattened bone to their feet. Then, in the late 1200s/early 1300s, the Dutch used steel to create sharpened blades, and the skates cut into the ice instead of gliding on the ice's surface. England started to take up the sport of ice skating in the 1600s. Over the years, ice skating has evolved into not only a fun wintertime activity, but also a competitive sport that encompasses figure skating, speed skating, ice dancing, and ice hockey. Figure skating was also the first sport to be included in the Olympic games—added at the 1908 London Games and in 1920 in Antwerp. In 1976, ice dancing was included.

Ice skating as a leisure sport can take place on outdoor and indoor rinks as well as frozen bodies of water such as lakes and ponds. When ice skating outside, ensure that the surface you want to skate on is completely frozen over. Look for posted signs or warnings before putting on your skates and helmet. Consider knee and elbow pads to help prevent injuries. One of the most well-known ice skating moves is an axel. To execute this move, a skater must jump from the outside edge of his or her skate, then rotate one-and-a-half times in the air, and land cleanly on an outside edge. Plus, this move must be done while moving backward! A double axel requires two-and-a-half rotations, and to do a triple, three-and-a-half rotations must be completed.
