Prior to his retirement in 2017, Dr. Smith served as president of Innovative Biodiagnostics, Inc. as well as the CEO of the Center for Imaging Technology Commercialization since 2017.

A respected voice in the field of biophysics, Dr. Smith has contributed numerous chapters to books, as well as articles to professional journals. He has served on a variety of advisory boards and executive boards since the turn of the century. To remain alert of recent developments in his fields of expertise, Dr. Smith maintains involvement with the Ontario Centres of Excellence, the Biophysical Society of Canada, the Canada Biochemical Society, the Biophysical Society of North America, and the International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics. He is recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and past president of the University of Manitoba Alumni Association.

In recognition of his contributions to the scientific community, Dr. Smith has been inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt, Order of the Star of Romania and an Officer of the Order of Canada. He has received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the government of Canada in 2008, Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Manitoba in 2007, and Queen's Jubilee Medal in 2012 and 2003. Dr. Smith has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in the World. In addition, he has received honorary degrees from Stockholm University, University of Winnipeg, Red River College, Brandon University and the Polish Academy of Science, Krakow.

Prior to pursuing a scientific career, Dr. Smith attended the University of Manitoba, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1961, and Master of Science in 1962. He completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1965. Early in his career, Dr. Smith joined the National Research Council as a research officer with the Division of Biological Sciences in Ottowa. He held this role until 1987, when he became the director general of the organization. For more than two decades thereafter, Dr. Smith served as the director general with the Institute for Biodiagnostics in Winnipeg. He later joined Innovative Biodiagnostics, Inc., where he held the role of president from 2013 to 2017. Over the past two decades Dr. Smith served on the executive committee of the Province of Manitoba Premier's Economic Advisory Board.
