Background: Globally, a total of 1.2 billion people live without adequate access to electricity, and another billion have less than four hours of reliable electricity each day. The vast majority of these off-grid communities are in developing Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and they are frequently among the world's poorest.

Appliances and the services they provide are in high demand in off-grid communities throughout the developing world. This demand frequently inspires off-grid consumers to purchase small renewable energy systems, such as solar home systems, to run the appliances. These clean energy systems often replace these households' needs for pre-modern, polluting energy sources such as kerosene and charcoal.

"We've seen that demand for TVs and other modern appliances drives demand for small renewable energy systems throughout the developing world," says Global LEAP initiative lead Caroline McGregor. "And off-grid households and small businesses that purchase these systems very quickly see the economic and health benefits of modern clean energy."

Energy-efficient, high-quality appliances optimize these benefits by extending run times, reducing energy costs, and making the most of the limited electricity available to off-grid consumers.

An initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial's Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership, the Global LEAP Awards support self-sustaining commercial markets for off-grid energy products by identifying and promoting the most energy-efficient, affordable, and highest-quality appliances. Competition and innovation will bring decreased prices and the increased scale required to fulfil the United Nations' goal of "Sustainable Energy for All" by 2030. globalleapawards.org
