FlipBooKitTM , which already has over 1,700 backers and $123,000 in pledges, will be funding its wildly successful Kickstarter campaign on October 30.  The DIY flip book project launched its campaign on Kickstarter.com in late September to coincide with its debut at New York Maker Faire, and within just 3 weeks, had already surpassed the 2nd most funded art project in Kickstarter history.  With just a few days to go, FlipBooKit masterminds  Mark Rosen, Wendy Marvel and Steve Goldstein hope to bring total funding to $150,000. They plan to deliver the kits for the 2012 holiday season.

Inspired by Rosen and Marvel's original flip book art, FlipBooKit (www.flipbookit.net) is an affordable DIY kit that allows anyone to make either a manual or motorized flip book from a video or set of photographs, creating a one-of-a-kind tactile kinetic art piece.  The kits appear to be especially popular among animators and artists, for whom flip books provide the perfect non-digital medium for showcasing their motion art.  Rosen explains, "When we displayed our art at the Bay Area 2012 Maker Faire, we were inundated with people requesting a kit version. Soon we realized that this was a true creative opportunity and we had to do something."  To bring their vision to life, the artists teamed up with inventor and product designer Steven Goldstein, who helped them prototype the new FlipBooKit in time to showcase the product at Maker Faire New York.  The response was overwhelming, and the stream of kids and adults crowding into the booth to play with the flip books served as a product test that the FlipBooKits passed with flying colors.

Kinetic artists Mark Rosen and Wendy Marvel have widely exhibited their series of original motorized flipbooks, which are based on the motion studies of Edweard Muybridge.  In addition to the Maker Faires, the series was shown this month in Hollywood at PTF's "REEL STORIES REAL LIVES" exhibit and is slated for an international tour.  The flipbooks will also be featured in the January 2013 issue of MAKE Magazine.

Mark Arnon Rosen is a kinetic artist living in Los Angeles, CA.  His background includes multimedia design, fabrication and electronics engineering. Mark creates gadgets, sculpts and art directs as well as collaborating on projects with his partner Marvel, as well as other artists and creative engineers.

Wendy Marvel is a fine artist and commercial artist working for top names in the music industry.  A well-known artist whose work is sought after by collectors, Wendy's art can be found in the permanent collection of the Santa Monica Museum of Art, as well as on the stages, web sites and tour books of some of the world's most popular recording artists.

Steven Goldstein is a product designer, fabricator and inventor named on 13 patents.  In addition to his own product development, Goldstein spent a total of ten years as Director of Entertainment Technology at Disney Imagineering and Sony Retail Entertainment.

All three of the project creators showed off their mechanical and creative skills as contestants on the 2012 Discovery Channel series, "Unchained Reaction" (Steve in Episode 1 and Wendy and Mark in Episode 6).
