PLYMOUTH, Mich., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- AVL announced today that Don Manvel, its North American Chairman and CEO, was recently awarded the prestigious Gold Merit Decoration of the Republic of Austria. The ceremony took place at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit on October 24. Christian Buchmann, Minister for Economy, Europe and Culture/Provincial Government of Steiermark, officiated, with Kathryn List, Chairman of the Board of the AVL Cultural Foundation, and Austrian Trade Commissioner Franz Roessler among the many dignitaries and guests in attendance. Don´s late wife Shelly, who passed away this summer, was specially recognized as Don's partner in private and business success at the decoration ceremony. According to List, CCS was the perfect venue for such an auspicious occasion. "Don has long been an enthusiastic backer of programs and initiatives that inspire young people," she said. "That includes being an instrumental champion of an international exchange of students and ideas between Austria's Steiermark universities and America's CCS and other Midwestern academic institutions."
In awarding this honor, the Republic of Austria also expressed its thanks to Don for his tireless support of so many Austrian initiatives in the US. This includes celebrations of the Austrian National Day in Chicago, the network of Austrian scientists in North America, and for his role in helping so many Austrian engineers gain valuable intercultural experience by working in one of AVL's US operations.
Today, within Austrian business circles, Don Manvel is "THE Austrian American Mr. Automotive" – an unofficial title which accurately depicts Manvel's business involvement on both sides of the Atlantic. "My lifelong philosophy has been that innovation knows no boundaries," said Manvel. "I take a great deal of satisfaction in what I do, and am both honored and humbled by this award and all that it represents."
