DCBA seminar focused on disabled bar members held at Miami-Brickell Hampton Inn

MIAMI, Nov. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- A seminar entitled "Call to Action Summit" was recently conducted by the Miami-Dade Chapter of the Florida Association of Women Lawyers, the Dade County Bar Association, and Disability Independence Group.  The program's purpose was to educate and enlighten Bar members to be sensitive to accessibility needs of persons with disabilities for lawyers in voluntary bar association functions.

The mandate and goal of the Disability Independence Group is to assure that disabled persons have equal access to Bar functions, seminars and other events.  For all too long the needs of disabled persons have been neglected.

The seminar, with 50 bar members and related interested parties attending, was held at the Hampton Inn & Suites - Miami Brickell Downtown.   The hotel is very much aware of the needs of the disabled and developed a hotel that is fully accessible to guests, visitors and attendees of events.  This was evidenced by those in attendance.  Accessibility, like sustainability, is often overlooked by developers.  Likewise the Hampton Inn & Suites - Miami Brickell Downtown has taken a leadership role in sustainability by being the only hotel in the City of Miami to be LEED certified.

Judge Maria Korvick of the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and Herman Russomano, III, Dade County Bar President, welcomed the participants and explained the overall purpose of the program.  Situations where disabled Bar members were unable to attend functions that were held in areas inaccessible to wheelchairs were pointed out and explained.  The Florida Bar feels very strongly about this situation and encourages the education of persons conducting events to which they expect disabled persons to attend.

Deborah Dietz and Sharon Langer of the Disability Independence Group worked with the staff of the Hampton Inn & Suites - Miami Brickell Downtown to ensure that the entire summit was accessible.  This included the room layout, table location, and the buffet lunch.  The Accessibility Handout, created by Disability Independence Group, was used to ensure that the aisle widths were correct, the table linens did not interfere with wheelchairs, and that there was appropriate seating for all of the attendees.  The summit not only discussed how to make an event accessible but it modeled auxiliary aids that might be needed at an event.  This included have real time captioning of all the speakers and an ASL interpreter.

"The Hampton Inn & Suites - Miami Brickell Downtown did an amazing job of preparing the venue for our event." Said Deborah Dietz, Executive Director of Disability Independence Group, "They went out of their way to meet all of our needs and they were wonderful.  We received comments after the event praising the layout of the room.  Not only were our disabled guests able to sit wherever they wanted, everyone enjoyed the Hampton's accommodation of the room. " Said Dietz.

Florida Bar CLE credits were offered for attendance to this seminar.
