WASHINGTON, June 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- DailyDutchInnovation.com celebrates the centuries-old Dutch start-up culture and shows how it continues to shape our modern lives. Every day, the site will highlight a different innovation from a variety of industries and sciences, mixing historical as well as current stories.
The Netherlands is a small country in Northern Europe, but has contributed a large number of revolutionary inventions, scientific discoveries, works of art, and engineering feats for our global community throughout the centuries. The stock exchange, Bluetooth, the metronome, Python (a programming language), and indoor clouds all have one thing in common: they all are rooted in Dutch innovation.
"In the Netherlands, innovation is not a conscious tactic. It is embedded in our culture," said Roger Kleinenberg, Innovation Counselor at the Netherlands Embassy. "With two-thirds of our country at or below sea level and nestled between larger neighbors, survival and prosperity has always depended on our ability to invent solutions. Our creativity and pragmatism along with an openness to other ideas and customs enable us to sustain centuries of Dutch start-up culture."
If you happen to be in the Atlanta area this summer and wish to experience Dutch creativity and ingenuity first hand, head to the High Museum of Art to see the exhibition "Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch Paintings from the Mauritshuis." Thirty-five selected paintings by Dutch masters, including Rembrandt and Vermeer, are on loan from the Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis in The Hague until September 29th 2013.
"Although the Dutch Masters were active several centuries ago, many of their defining characteristics are still present in today's Dutch start-up culture," said Ambassador Rudolf Bekink. "They were known not to dwell over endless theoretical discussions on how things should be done, instead preferring to spend their energy actually producing art."
