LAS VEGAS, May 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Courtyard Las Vegas Convention Center and Residence Inn Las Vegas Convention Center are proud to announce that they have been awarded the LEED Gold certification.
The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.
"We realize the importance of caring not only for our guests but also for the environment," said Casey Grieme, who serves as general manager for both hotels.
The Las Vegas Convention Center hotels achieved LEED certification for implementing practical and measurable strategies and solutions aimed at achieving high performance in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
The hotels joined forces to purchase brand pens, notepads and laundry bags made from recycled materials as well as replaced all lighting with energy-efficient bulbs. Occupancy sensors were added to the HVAC system in all guest rooms to conserve energy, and preventative maintenance programs were fine-tuned to ensure efficiency. Core cleaning chemicals from Ecolab also were substituted for more earth-friendly products.
"As neighbors and sister properties under Marriott, we wanted to run our hotels in an energy-efficient way and hopefully inspire other hotels around the country to make changes to do the same," Grieme said.
LEED is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. More than 44,000 projects are currently participating in the commercial and institutional LEED rating systems, comprising more than 10.3 billion square feet of construction space in all 50 states and 135 countries.
"The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health," said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO and founding chairman of the U.S. Green Building Council. "The work of innovative building projects such as those of the hotels near Las Vegas Convention Center is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement."
