SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Friday marked the launch of the Burning Man Project, a non-profit organization focused on catalyzing creative culture around the world. The organization announced its first Board of Directors and its six programs at a launch in San Francisco's UN Plaza at 5 PM PST. The Mission of the nonprofit Project will be to facilitate and extend the culture that has issued from the Burning Man event into the rest of the world.
Beyond the namesake event in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, Burning Man has expanded into a worldwide phenomenon driven by creativity & ingenuity. In its 25 years, that annual event has been the keystone of a global culture and its community; the new nonprofit Project aims to support and share Burning Man in ways that can benefit anyone anywhere, far beyond the annual event, serving as an extraordinary source of creativity, collaboration and inspiration.
The first program effort for the Burning Man Project is "Civic Participation," focusing on the economic and social revitalization of the Central Market Street corridor in San Francisco, the new home to the Burning Man headquarters. The Project will draw upon knowledge gained from years of event production, participant co-created experience, and community organizing to work collaboratively with San Francisco citizens, neighborhood groups, government agencies, and other institutions and partners. The organization has been actively exploring alignment with the San Francisco Mayor's Office of Economic Development around public space arts activation, the development of art walks, and other related activities.
The Project envisions Central Market as an arts & innovation district; components of this district will include the cutting edge of technology, social enterprise, sustainability and sharing economy, along with new and revolutionary forms of art. Over time, the organization will also explore how it can help support youth and education, observant that the Tenderloin boasts the highest density of child residents of any neighborhood in the city.

The theme of the launch event at UN Plaza was "Welcome Home," a greeting used at the entrance of the annual Burning Man event, chosen for this event to celebrate a return to the center of Burning Man's city of cultural origin. Speakers included San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee; Board of Supervisor President David Chiu; Burning Man Project Board President Larry Harvey, and Burning Man Project Board Member Chip Conley.
The launch event was followed by Rolling Renaissance, a new art walk & bike ride centered near the headquarters of the Burning Man Project at 6th and Market Street. The event was broadcast live on Burning Man's internet radio station, Shouting Fire (www.shoutingfire.org) and featured performers Christen Lien, The Loyd Family Players, and DJ's Tamo & Erik Hz of the Space Cowboys.
