WASHINGTON, Aug. 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- BrightLife Direct is excited to announce the winner of the 2016 BrightLife Physical Therapist Scholarship - Lacy McMurtrey, a current Angelo State University student pursuing a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree.
Lacy has a BS in Biology and is recognized by professors as one of the top students in the Physical Therapy Program at Angelo State. She maintains a 4.0 GPA while volunteering her time at organizations like Sonrisas Therapeutic Riding, which provides therapy to those with physical, mental, and emotional challenges through horseback riding lessons. Lacy is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association Texas Chapter and the Angelo State Physical Therapy Association. Lacy is from a small town and is the first in her family to obtain a bachelor's degree, and will also be the first to obtain a graduate degree. As a child, she was always passionate about science and helping others, dreaming of being a veterinarian or a firefighter, so it's only natural she would end up in a field to aid others. Through the experience of watching loved ones suffer in pain, and the joy of seeing others heal and return to their lives, Lacy was inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy.
"Experiences with my brother's vehicle accident, a friend's back surgery, my mother's frozen shoulder, and volunteering at a local therapeutic riding facility all introduced me to the idea that this field could restore a broken, pained person to a functional and pain-free daily life. Such an idea is wholly beautiful." - Lacy M (excerpt from essay)
The BrightLife Physical Therapist Scholarship was created for students studying to become an occupational therapist, physical therapist or a physical therapist assistant to help ease the financial burden to continue their education to do so. This year's scholarship provides $1,000 to be applied directly to tuition. BrightLife received many notable applications from passionate students committed to helping their patients heal and return to a healthy, independent life. Our Scholarship Committee was particularly impressed by the commitment of applicants to give back to the community, volunteering at organizations like The Children's Therapy Center in Washington, Pennsylvania and the Texas Brain and Spine Institute. BrightLife Direct is a family-owned medical supply company that works with thousands of patients who are dependent on the care and expertise of physical and occupational therapists. This scholarship was created as a way of giving back to this dedicated community of professionals. Applicants were evaluated on academics, professional goals, engagement with the community, and financial need.Congratulations to this outstanding student and we look forward to seeing her impact on the physical therapy community in the future.
