DALLAS, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In September, 2012, Dallas businessman William Esping launched the Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Support Initiative to support legal aid in Texas. Moved by a severe lack of affordable legal assistance for low-income and marginalized citizens, Mr. Esping founded the initiative to provide funds for legal aid agencies and raise awareness of legal aid issues.
In Texas alone, only one legal aid attorney is available for every 17,000 people whose low income qualifies them for free legal assistance. Nationwide, however, these households face approximately one civil legal need per year and often cannot obtain the help they need. As Bill Esping notes, "The fact is, there is an overwhelming demand for civil legal services. The LSC Justice Gap Report shows that for every low-income person that was able to gain legal assistance, one eligible applicant was turned away for lack of adequate resources. This is an underemphasized gap in our system of justice and public welfare."
Mr. Esping cites this growing justice gap as a denial of citizens' rights and one of the biggest contributors to poverty nationwide. To help give all Texans equal access to the legal system, Mr. Esping recently started the Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Support Initiative.
About the Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Support Initiative
In September 2012, the Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Support Initiative gave over $10,000 to seven legal aid and human rights agencies across Texas: Aid to Victims of Domestic Violence, Disability Rights Texas, Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, Lone Star Legal Aid, Texas Access to Justice Foundation, and Texas Legal Services Center. These organizations provide legal counsel, representation, and personal support for Texans who are near or below the poverty line or whose rights are compromised by disability or lack of legal status. The Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Initiative also provides information about online resources for individuals facing fraud or civil lawsuits.
By supporting legal aid agencies and educating citizens, the Bill Esping Lawsuit and Fraud Support Initiative will raise awareness of the justice gap and change the legal system that fails impoverished Americans. As Mr. Esping says, "A just legal system functions well not just for those who have means, but for those who don't. We are going to support organizations that help ensure equal representation and legal education for all Americans."
