SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The 2013 Winter Gala for Atheists of Utah will be held at The Tasting Room in Salt Lake City, Utah with catering provided by Culinary Crafts. The February 23rd event features a buffet dinner, silent auction, and dancing throughout the evening.
Atheists of Utah is organizing this event to generate awareness and raise funds for Utah's Homeless Youth Resource Center. The HYRC, run by Volunteers of America - Utah, is the state's primary facility to assist homeless youths, providing services for 60-65 kids each day. Other organizations in Utah assist homeless families with children, but the HYRC is the only organization that helps kids who are alone on the street with nowhere else to go. The HYRC helped over 1,200 youths in the last year alone, and has seen a 160% increase in the last five years of the number of youths who need assistance. These kids have run away from abusive homes or have been forced out due to tough economic times. Approximately 1/3 of Utah's homeless youth population left home or were thrown out for coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.
Due to financial constraints, zoning restrictions, and various other limitations, the Homeless Youth Resource Center is not allowed to provide lodging and is forced to close their doors at 5:00pm each day, leaving youths to fend for themselves overnight. During operating hours, the HYRC provides a safe haven where kids can get a hot meal, warm clothes, tents, sleeping bags, toiletries, use laundry and shower facilities, and get information and references for housing, education, and jobs. One of the goals of the resource center is to find a new location that will allow youths to stay overnight until a more permanent housing solution can be arranged.
Atheists of Utah has been a proud supporter of the Homeless Youth Resource Center for many years now and hopes this fundraiser will bring the HYRC the financial resources they so desperately need.
Atheists of Utah was organized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 2001, and for over a decade it has provided social outreach and support to Utah's non-theistic community, organized support for others in need throughout the valley, and raised awareness about issues relating to non-theism. Funding for Atheists of Utah comes solely through membership and donations.
There will be a variety of items available for the silent auction at this year's Winter Gala, including artwork donated by talented local artists, and autographed books by noted authors including Joanne Hanks and David Fitzgerald.
Tickets for the Winter Gala are $45 for Atheists of Utah members, $60 for non-members, and can be purchased by visiting the AofU website at http://www.atheistsofutah.org/ or by contacting a member of the Board of Directors via email at email@example.com.
