Architectural Digest Show 2013 - International Stone Collaborates With Franke Kitchen Systems

Designed and created by Jake Levy

HATFIELD, Pa., March 13, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In March 2011, Brooklyn based custom stone artisan shop International Stone Collections participated in the Architectural Digest Home Design Show, where they met and decided to collaborate with Krista Rivers from Franke's Marketing team. Franke Kitchen Systems is the world's leading provider of intelligent systems for domestic kitchens. These two dynamic and innovative companies got to work on a project that would result in a stunning one-of-a-kind functional art piece.

International Stone Collections owner Jake Levy designed and created the piece, starting out with 500 lbs of refined amethyst to create the sink base. The amethyst was further refined to 80 lbs, and each crystal was hand-placed and assiduously laid out one by one across the angular sink. The specific type of raw amethyst used in this piece is very rare and collected from geological formations called geodes, a sedimentary structure found in certain types of volcanic rock. The geodes are spherical structures that contain amethyst inside.  The collected geodes must be split open and each crystal inside is individually extracted and separated from the rock.

Amethyst is a member of the Quartz family. It is found in varying hues of purple, ranging from light lilac to deep purple and violet. Its color comes from trace amounts of iron and aluminum, and the deeper shades of amethyst are considered the most valuable. Until the 18th century Amethyst was regarded as a precious gemstone equal to diamond.  It is historically associated with royalty and rulers such as Catherine the Great, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar and Marcus Aurelius were known to have a love for amethyst and wore it during their reigns.

Accompanying the brilliant amethyst base is a Brazilian gray quartz top and a glamorous, high fashion Polyedro sink by Franke. Franke has literally reinvented the sink with this new high fashion design – representing a breakthrough not only in design, but elegance as well. The geometrical, multifaceted, diamond-cut bowl has the sink taking on a whole new stylish and unique experience. Exciting aesthetics express the evolution of sinks in kitchens and living areas which are the heart of the home.
