FARMINGTON, Conn., March 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- There may be good reason mobile subscribers of Verizon Wireless and other carriers who have not yet upgraded their mobile devices to the new iPhone 5 have held out. Earlier this week, T-Mobile announced plans to offer the iPhone at a low $99 price point on its no contract 4G LTE network this April 12. The added flexibility and significantly reduced price of T-Mobile's upcoming iPhone promotion introduces some major competition for AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, which require two-year contracts to get a subsidized iPhone. These trends along with the added anticipation of several other flagship models slated for launch by branded vendors such as Samsung and HTC, in early 2013 have contributed to slowed growth in global mobile phone shipment volumes in the first quarter of 2013. Despite this, smartphone share of the global mobile phone shipment volume continued to rise at an incredible 44 percent in 2012. "Worldwide Major Mobile Phone Vendor Performance, 1Q 2013" estimated that overall mobile phone shipments stood at nearly 700 million units to pull in 10.4 percent year-on-year growth.

In Taiwan, full-year shipment volumes of smartphone are expected to be up 22.5 percent in 2013 to reach 251 million units. "The Taiwanese Mobile Phone Industry, 1Q 2013: Branded Vendors", a new report from the Institute for Information Industry (MIC), projects total shipment values will hover at $54.2 billion in 2013, which is 19.7 percent growth compared to 2012's $45.2 billion.
Taiwanese Smartphone branded vendors have expanded their efforts to explore new market opportunities in emerging countries as the industry's average selling price (ASP) has been on the decline. New 4G LTE product designs are expected to help expand product mix and increase mobile ASP in 2013. While the report predicts the industry's ASP will drop slightly from $221 in 2012 to $216 in 2013, growth in shipments should help displace the difference. The report forecasts that Taiwanese smartphone shipment values in 2013 will still manage to sustain an approximately 20% growth year on year.
