Advanced Practice Providers Satisfied, But Challenges to Profession Loom

ATLANTA, March 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Despite high job satisfaction and demand, nurse practitioners and physician assistants report taking on more risks, responsibilities and workloads, according to a nationwide survey of advanced practice providers.


Advanced Practice Trends 2012-2013: An Attitude & Outlook Report on Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants highlights survey findings conducted by Jackson Healthcare, the nation's third largest healthcare staffing company, in conjunction with and

Seventy-four percent of survey respondents reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their current work environment. Only five percent reported being very dissatisfied.

Drivers of NP and PA satisfaction included work environment (37 percent), patients (28 percent), pay and benefits (27 percent), autonomy (21 percent) and variety (14 percent). Drivers of dissatisfaction included management (27 percent), feeling undervalued (22 percent), salary (19 percent), support staff (13 percent) and physician attitude (11 percent). 

"Advanced practice providers are a critically important player in responding to the converging trends of the physician shortage, aging Baby Boomers and the predicted flood of newly insured patients," said Richard L. Jackson, chairman and CEO of Jackson Healthcare.

Susan Mesa, president of believes, despite high job satisfaction and demand, factors such as state-to-state regulatory inconsistencies and doubt about advanced practitioners' roles may limit the expanded coverage opportunities they offer.

The vast majority of nurse practitioners and physician assistants surveyed (83 percent) will continue in their role as advanced practice providers through 2013. However, the population is aging. According to survey respondents, 40 percent plan to retire within the next 10 years and the majority (60 percent of nurse practitioners and 47 percent of physician assistants) plan to retire within the next 15 years.

Respondents were self-selected with 395 respondents completing the survey. The error range for this survey at the 95th percent confidence level is +/- 5.0 percent.
