JOLIET, Ill., Oct. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Green Car Journal annually has selected a Green Car of the Year since 2005 to recognize the most important "green" vehicle of that model year. While the 2014 winner isn't expected to be announced until the Los Angeles Auto Show in late November, Green Car Journal publicized its five finalists — which included the completely redesigned 2014 Mazda3 — for the prestigious designation.
Mazda's third-generation compact car is being considered for the Green Car of the Year title thanks to an eco-friendly combination of advanced engineering and smart technology. At the forefront of its "green" approach is the Skyactiv® technology suite, which includes the Mazda3's base 2.0-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine.
That high-compression ratio powertrain generates 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque while also propelling the Mazda3 sedan to fuel-economy figures of 30 mpg in the city and 41 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates.
While that high-efficiency base engine effortlessly exceeds the 40 mpg milestone, the new i-ELOOP regenerative braking system available with the more powerful 2.5-liter engine is one of the most eco-friendly features in the auto industry. The system captures energy typically lost during braking and converts it to electricity to help power the Mazda3's interior components. The i-ELOOP system is capable of improving fuel-economy by as much as 10 percent while the EPA estimates drivers will experience a one mpg boost across the board.
The 2014 Mazda3 is joined by the Audi A6 TDI, BMW 328d, Honda Accord, and Toyota Corolla as Green Car of the Year finalists. While those economic models compete for the Green Car of the Year designation, the 2014 Mazda3 also faces stiff competition within its segment.
