LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- As 2013 comes to a close, 2014 will usher in new employment laws workers need to understand, reports Los Angeles wage and hour lawyer Eric Grover.
"With each new year, we welcome new employment laws that affect millions of workers," explains Grover. "Education is key to ensuring that you won't become a victim of wage theft or other labor law violations."
The California Chamber of Commerce and the Los Angeles Times revealed the following laws would take effect in 2014:
• Domestic employees: Specific in-home workers, like those who care for the sick, disabled and elderly will now receive overtime pay.
• Meal and rest periods: Employees in certain industries will now have "recovery" rest periods in order to reduce the risk of heat illness. During this time, employees are prohibited from working. Monetary penalties will be levied if meal and rest period breaks are denied.
• Damages for minimum wage violations: Violators of minimum wage laws will be required to pay damages to employees in addition to penalties.
• Protections for exercising rights under Labor Code: Employers are banned from retaliating against employees who report labor law violations. A $10,000 civil penalty per employee can be assessed per violation.
• Lien on property: A lien on the employer's personal property will be levied if it does not pay fines or back wages, as ordered by the state Labor Commissioner.
• Whistle-blower protections: Employees are protected for reporting labor law and wage and hour law violations.
• Immigration: Employers are prohibited from threatening employees who file a formal labor law violation report with contacting immigration officials.
• Business license revocation: Employer's business license will be suspended or revoked for reporting or threatening to report an employee's immigration status to federal law enforcement.
